This 3-day, small escorted group tour itinerary is perfect if you want to explore the dramatic coastline between Adelaide and Melbourne but are less inclined to drive yourself. See native wildlife, enjoy superb food and wine and discover the memorable Great Ocean Road.

Day 1 – The Adelaide Hills and Coonawarra

Departing from Adelaide your tour begins with a visit to the Adelaide Hills, just a short drive from the city. Here there is time to explore Hahndorf, a contemporary German village, proud of its roots. The tree-lined main street is filled with galleries, shops, wine cellar doors, a gin distillery and there are some cool artisan food producers such as Udder Delights cheeses and Buzz Honey. From Hahndorf travel to the town of Keith for a lunch stop, before your route turns south into wine country.

Padthaway is relatively new in South Australian wine terms and your tour travels through here enroute to the World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves. The next port of call is the beautiful Coonawarra wine region, regarded as one of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon regions in the world. After sampling some of the local wines, continue on to Mt Gambier, the overnight stop for this evening.

Day 2 – Great Ocean Road

After breakfast visit the ‘blue crater lake’ in Mt Gambier before continuing on to Port Fairy, with a stop at Tower Hill Game Reserve where you might spot koalas, kangaroos and emu living wild in an extinct, volcanic crater. Your Great Ocean Road experience starts with the impressive limestone stacks of Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands. You then travel to Loch Ard Gorge, site of one of Australia’s most infamous ship wreck in the 19th century.

The 12 Apostles are an iconic sight on this coast and there are plenty of photo opportunities. Hear how the stacks were created, then take a meander along the boardwalks or head for the skies on a scenic helicopter flight along the coast (own expense). The journey then travels through the beautiful Otway Ranges to Apollo Bay, where you’ll stop for dinner before arriving at your overnight accommodation at Beacon Point Ocean Villas, set high on a hill with panoramic views of the Southern Ocean.

Day 3 – Otway National Park – Great Ocean Road

Day three begins with breakfast at the Bay Leaf Café, a favourite with the locals. Travelling through the Otway Ranges your first stop is Maits Rest for a gentle stroll through the cool, temperate rainforest gully. Here the flora and fauna dates back millions of years, to a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth. As you continue towards Melbourne enjoy some time at Kennett River, a lovely area for viewing wild koalas in their native setting. After a lunch stop in the seaside town of Lorne, you’ll follow the surf coast and see the surfers in action at Torquay and Bells Beach.

Afternoon tea is taken at the gateway to the Great Ocean Road, Geelong, before arriving in Melbourne, where you’ll be dropped at your hotel.
