The Northern Territory, or ‘Territory’ as it’s locally known delivers quintessential Australian experiences by the bucket load. This is where you’ll find that searingly blue, cloudless sky clashing with the bright red outback sand. Stark white gum trees and lush wetlands, a multitude of wild life, ancient rock art and Aboriginal heritage accessible for all.

The ‘Top End’ is where you’ll find Darwin, a laid-back city with a warm, tropical vibe. Base yourself here for day trips into the Kakadu National Park, or Katherine and Litchfield, or for more in-depth experiences pick an escorted tour. These can take any format from coach tours staying in comfy hotels, to small group options staying in lodges or permanent tented campsites.

The Red Centre, quite literally in the centre, is home to Alice Springs, or ‘the Alice’, Ayers Rock or Uluru to give it its Aboriginal name and Kings Canyon. The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) are a magnificent domed rock formation close to Ayers Rock and we’d recommend a tour of both. Sunset and sunrise tour tend to be the norm, this is when the colours are at their most dramatic but there’s a multitude of other experiences available from camel treks to Harley Davidson rides, Aboriginal tours to hot air balloon flights. The town of Alice Springs is an oasis bounded by the MacDonnell Ranges. Join or depart on the Ghan train from here but make sure you spend a day or two exploring.
