The Ghan

Retracing the footsteps of the Afghan camel traders from whence it got its name, The Ghan travels between the South Australian city of Adelaide and the Tropical Top End capital of Darwin, via Alice Springs, through the very heart of Australia. This epic train is a kilometre in length and there are off train excursions included in Alice Springs and Katherine plus, depending on your direction of travel, outback experiences in Marla and Manguri.

The Ghan provides the perfect way to travel between the South Australian city of Adelaide and Alice Springs, heart of the Australian outback.
Day 1 – Adelaide

The Ghan departs Adelaide at noon and after settling into your chosen private cabin, make your way to the Queen Adelaide restaurant for lunch accompanied by your choice of fine wine. As the Ghan rolls north the farmlands of South Australia merge into Mallee scrub and the magnificent Flinders Ranges will fade into the horizon. Wake with a reviving coffee or juice as you witness a colourful outback sunrise at Marla, in the remote reaches of South Australia. Once back on board brunch is served with your choice of a light bite or something a little more indulgent. Relax as The Ghan makes its way into Alice Springs. This heartland oasis gives you a glimpse into outback living of yesteryear but also the unique lifestyle of today.

Day 1 – Adelaide

An exploration of Alice Springs which includes the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base, the National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame or if you want to get up close and personal to the local reptiles then visit the Reptile Centre instead. The group then visits the historical precinct of the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, where you’ll learn more of the first European Settlement in Alice Springs and the hugely important role the station played in bridging the isolation and communication gap between Australia’s remotest settlements. Back on board enjoy pre-dinner drinks with your fellow travellers before dinner.

Day 3 – Katherine & Darwin

This morning enjoy a hearty breakfast on board before a day of cultural immersion in Katherine. Off train excursions today include a leisurely cruise amongst the sand stone gorges on the Katherine River or spend time with the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of Nitmiluk where you’ll share their culture, learn their ways and try your hand at skills developed over thousands of years. Back on train relax over a late lunch and enjoy your final few hours on board as The Ghan rolls into Darwin.

Enjoy one of the great train journeys of the world from Darwin to Alice Springs via Katherine. Explore the tropical Top End and ancient Red Centre. Watch the passing scenery change from the lush tropical landscape to the rusty hues of Australia's Red Centre as you travel through the heart of the continent.
Day 1 – Darwin

Board The Ghan in Darwin for the start of an incredible journey, through the magnificent outback landscapes of Australia. Settle in to your private cabin and then make your way to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant, where lunch will be served. After lunch the train pulls into Katherine for the first of the included off-train excursions. Take a cruise on the Katherine River or gain an insight into the traditional owners of Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge), the Jawoyn people, with a tailor-made, cultural experience. Upgraded experiences are also available including scenic helicopter flights. Back on board dinner is served as the sun sets. When you head back to your cabin you’ll find it ready for a restful sleep as The Ghan continues south towards Alice Springs.

Day 1 – Darwin

Board The Ghan in Darwin for the start of an incredible journey, through the magnificent outback landscapes of Australia. Settle in to your private cabin and then make your way to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant, where lunch will be served. After lunch the train pulls into Katherine for the first of the included off-train excursions. Included off train excursions include a visit to the Alice Springs Desert Park, a vivid portrayal of Australia’s desert environment blending the plants, animals and people of the region, here you’ll join an experienced guide for an exclusive walking tour through the park. Day 3 – Coober Pedy

After breakfast this morning The Ghan pulls into Manguri, which is quite literally in-the-middle-of-nowhere. From here you will be whisked away to the sun-scorched opal fields of Coober Pedy, where more than half the population live beneath ground. You’ll venture into the tunnels and caves of this underground town, mine for riches and visit the other-worldly underground Serbian Orthodox church. Lunch is enjoyed beneath the earth’s surface before heading for the lunar-like Breakaways, a striking landscape of flat-topped mesas.

Day 4 – Adelaide

This morning the landscape has changed from rich red of the outback to the gentle green fields of South Australia. The Ghan arrives into Adelaide after breakfast. You could extend your stay in the city or perhaps head to the wine region of the Barossa Valley or the wildlife-rich delights of Kangaroo Island.

The Indian Pacific

This trans-continental journey travels between Sydney on the Pacific Ocean and Perth on the Indian Ocean, via Adelaide, a distance of over 2700 miles. The Indian Pacific has been crossing the country for almost 50 years and this is a truly memorable way to see Australia. Depending on your direction of travel and departure points there are off train excursions in Broken Hill, Adelaide, Cook and Kalgoorlie.

Travel the length of the Nullabor Plain on this memorable train journey between Adelaide and Perth.
Day 1 – Adelaide

Your journey begins before you even step on board with a welcome dinner experience at the Adelaide Terminal. You’ll share fabulous food and wine with your fellow travellers before the evening departure from Adelaide. Once onboard, your train host will show you to your cabin where you can relax or perhaps head for the Outback Lounge for a nightcap.

Day 2 – The Nullabor

Today is a day of solitude and epic timeless landscapes as the Indian Pacific makes its way across the mighty Nullabor Plain. Relax in your cabin or join fellow guests for this memorable day travelling the longest single stretch of railway in Australia. This evening a short stop is made in Rawlinna for pre-dinner drinks and canapés under the starts. Dinner is served back on board.

Day 3 – Perth

Today’s journey takes you through the cool green hills of the Avalon Valley before arriving into Perth mid-afternoon.

After breakfast the train makes a short stop in Cook, with a population of just four! Back on board, you continue your journey on Australia’s longest single stretch of railway, through The Nullabor – which gets its name from the Latin meaning ‘no trees’. There is something quite majestic about the sense of limitless time and space here. All meals are enjoyed on board today.

Day 3 – Adelaide

The desert landscapes have made way for the rolling countryside of South Australia. Start the day with breakfast before your early morning arrival into Adelaide.

Alternatively, join a City Highlights Tour which includes a visit to the Adelaide Hills and Haighs Chocolate Factory. You’ll be back on board for lunch as the Indian Pacific heads for the outback town of Broken Hill, one of Australia’s legendary outback bases known for its wide streets, country pubs and links to the Royal Flying Doctor Service and School of the Air.

Day 4 – Sydney

Enjoy breakfast this morning as the train winds its way through the beautiful Blue Mountains. You can choose to disembark and enjoy an off-train excursion or stay on board and continue into Sydney for a late morning arrival. Guests choosing the off-train excursion will arrive in Sydney mid-afternoon on a private train charter.

Named after the two oceans it travels between, the Indian Pacific travels between Sydney and Perth via Adelaide on an epic 4,352km journey every week. This epic rail journey will take you through the hazy landscapes of the Blue Mountains, across the remote stretches of the Nullabor Plain and from a city of four million inhabitants via a ghost town with a population of just four, to Perth, the sunny capital of Western Australia.
Day 1 – Sydney

Board the Indian Pacific in Sydney mid-afternoon for the start of an incredible journey across Australia. Settle in to your private cabin and enjoy the scenery as the trains makes it way through the Blue Mountains or mingle with your fellow travellers in the Explorer Lounge. As the train navigates the heights of the soaring mountain ranges make your way to the Queen Adelaide Restaurant for signature dining experience then retire for a few late-night drinks or head back to your cabin for the evening.

Day 2 – Broken Hill and Adelaide

Wake early with a coffee as the Indian Pacific pulls into Broken Hill, a classic outback town. The included off train excursion tells the story of the mining history and the vibrant artistic culture that thrives here. At the Pro Hart Gallery learn about one of Australia’s most iconic and enduring artists. Back on board enjoy a light breakfast. Lunch is also served on board as you cross the border into South Australia. You have a couple of choices for your off-train experiences as the train pulls into Adelaide. Enjoy a walking tour of central Adelaide and a beautiful dinner in the National Wine Centre, or perhaps you’d prefer to explore the wineries of the Barossa Valley with dinner included before returning to the train. Between October and March there is also the option to visit McLaren Vale, a renowned culinary region, where the ‘vines meet the sea’.

Day 3 – The Nullabor

On Board Both Trains

  • Platinum Service

    This is the highest level of service aboard the trains. Spacious cabins are configured by day as a private lounge with panoramic windows, comfortable seating, table and ottomans. By night the lounges convert to double or twin beds and you have a full size ensuite shower room. Continental breakfast can be enjoyed in your cabin as well as refreshments. 

    The Platinum Club is where the included hearty breakfasts, 2-course lunches and 3-course evening meals, are served along with a complimentary range of beverages.

  • Gold Service

    Gold service cabins are configured with a 3-seater lounge by day, which converts to upper and lower berths by night. Cabins have a private ensuite and the all-inclusive meals are served in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. Australian wines, beers, a selection of spirts and non-alcoholic beverages are also included. 

    Gold Superior cabins are available which have a little more space and give the option of a 3⁄4 size double bed plus a fold down berth.
