Australia’s newest rail journey travels along the rugged coastline, passing sun-kissed beaches and forested peaks between Adelaide and Brisbane.

The northbound journey from Adelaide takes 3 days, watch the wild scenery of the Grampians slide past, delve into the art, history and culinary temptations in Canberra and walk with the sand beneath your toes before arrival into Brisbane. If you’re heading south the journey takes 4 days with a wonderful beachside dining experience in Coffs Harbour, wine tasting in the Hunter Valley and a day exploring Melbourne or the myriad delights of the Great Ocean Road before winding through the Adelaide Hills into Adelaide. 

Onboard Service Options

  • Platinum Service

    This is the highest level of service aboard the trains. Spacious cabins are configured by day as a private lounge with panoramic windows, comfortable seating, table and ottomans. By night the lounges convert to double or twin beds and you have a full size ensuite shower room. Continental breakfast can be enjoyed in your cabin as well as refreshments.

    The Platinum Club is where the included hearty breakfasts, 2-course lunches and 3-course evening meals, are served along with a complimentary range of beverages.

  • Gold Service

    Gold service cabins are configured with a 3-seater lounge by day, which converts to upper and lower berths by night. Cabins have a private ensuite and the all-inclusive meals are served in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. Australian wines, beers, a selection of spirts and non-alcoholic beverages are also included.

    Gold Superior cabins are available which have a little more space and give the option of a 3⁄4 size double bed plus a fold down berth.

              

Adelaide to Brisbane

Day 1 – Adelaide

As the train leaves Adelaide, settle in and get familiar with your cabin. Enjoy morning tea and then a relaxed lunch on board while watching the ever-changing landscape glide by. During the late afternoon, the Great Southern arrives in regional Victoria where you’ll have a chance to experience the beauty of the Grampians region. Enjoy an outdoor dining experience taking in the stunning natural surrounds, and native wildlife while enjoying local food and wine. There are options to take a guided walk, drive to a lookout or simply sit back and relax.

Day 2 – Canberra and Surrounds

Enjoy a drive through the countryside on the way to the Australia’s capital where you will enjoy a visit to Parliament House and lunch before your choice of tours at the National War Memorial, Parliament House, National Gallery of Australia or the National Museum of Australia. Alternatively, you can spend a relaxed day wine tasting and dining in the Murrumbateman food and wine region before returning to the train.

Day 3 – Coffs Harbour and Surrounds

Choose your own adventure today with a variety of options available. Opt for the Boardwalk to Beach excursion, stopping at the small station of Urunga to take in the spectacular coastline views and Great Dividing Range along the Urunga Boardwalk before travelling to Coffs Harbour for a relaxing morning wandering around the Harbourside Markets, historic jetty or simply relaxing by the seaside.

The Coffs Explorer excursion travels up to Sealy Lookout offering views for miles from the Forest Sky Pier before travelling back to Coffs for time to explore the markets, historic jetty or relax by the beach. Otherwise, simply make the most of Coffs Harbour’s beautiful beaches with an entire morning spent seaside. Wander along the coast, have a dip in the ocean, play a game of beach cricket or simply relax on the sand.

Brisbane to Adelaide

Day 1 – Brisbane and Coffs Harbour

After setting off from Brisbane, enjoy lunch on board and a relaxing afternoon settling in to your private cabin before arriving at the coastal town of Coffs Harbour. As the sun dips beneath the horizon, enjoy a unique beachside dinner where you’ll feast on local produce and fresh seafood matched with fine wines, while the waves lap at the shore nearby. After a few leisurely hours, you’ll re-board the train and set off for the night.

Day 2 – Hunter Valley, Port Stephens or Newcastle

Start the day with a hearty breakfast on board before setting off for a full day of Off Train Excursions. Today you get to choose your own adventure with your choice of the Hunter Valley, Newcastle or Port Stephens.
  • Hunter Valley Wine Region

    Meander through the picturesque and historic vineyards of the Hunter Valley, where you can sample wines from both world-renowned brands and boutique cellar doors. Your day will include cellar door experiences, winery tours and a sumptuous lunch.

  • Port Stephens by Land and Sea 

    Travel to Nelson Bay for a relaxing cruise spotting dolphins and taking in the beauty of the Bay before lunch at the Marina. Next stop is the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes where you’ll explore the beach by 4WD van, stopping to hunt for pippies (clams) and driving to the top of a sand dune before returning to the train for dinner.

     

  • Newcastle Explorer

    Take in spectacular coastal views and discover Newcastle’s unique blend of old and new with a guided walking tour, lunch and a historical Fort Scratchley site visit. Finish the day with a visit to Strzelecki Lookout and stroll along the Newcastle Memorial Walk.

                    

     

This evening enjoy a regionally-inspired meal on board before retiring for the night.

Day 3 – Melbourne, Great Ocean Road or the Moorabool Valley and Geelong

After breakfast on board choose how to explore Victoria. Discover the bustling city of Melbourne, take a road trip to the Great Ocean Road or a relaxed afternoon in the Moorabool Valley and Geelong Waterfront.
  • Melbourne Explorer

    Take in the breathtaking views of Melbourne from Eureka Skydeck, the highest public observation tower in the Southern Hemisphere, and lunch at Eureka 89. Then get to know Melbourne city with your choice of a laneway walking tour, a tour of the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, or free time to shop and enjoy the city sights. As the day ends, the coach will transport you to the awaiting train at Inverleigh Station stopping along the way for a sumptuous dinner and wine tasting.

  • Wonders of the Great Ocean Road

    Set off on a road trip by coach through regional Victoria to the Great Ocean Road to see unforgettable highlights such as the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge or London Bridge, majestic collections of crumbling pillars rising from the Southern Ocean. On the return journey to Inverleigh Station, enjoy dinner and drinks at a heritage homestead in regional Victoria.

  • Wine and Waterfront

    After brunch on board, set off to enjoy wine tasting and stunning views at a regional Victorian vineyard before heading to the Geelong Waterfront. Set your own pace by wandering along the foreshore discovering public art and history such as the Pier, Eastern Beach and Baywalk Bollards or just sit and soak up the sights and sounds of the foreshore. Finish the day with dinner and wine tasting before returning to the train that night.

Day 4 – Arrival in Adelaide

As the train journeys through the charming Adelaide Hills, enjoy your last breakfast on board before arriving into Adelaide and the end of your Great Southern train journey.
